I have an 8270 (1978) that I picked up a couple years ago. Got it running at the time, but it was difficult to start and got moreso.
I am trying to resurrect it. Bought a pair of crank seals as they seem to be a maintenance item.
Pulled the engine and then the PTO assembly. There is a lot of oil inside of it--if that is the only seal, then a bunch of 2-stroke oil ends up in that housing and keeps the gears lubed?
Since it was not leaking externally, I guess that means the lower seal is okay, but I'm going to change it anyway.
Question is, is there another seal northward of the PTO seal (between the crank case and the PTO housing)?
Given the diameter of the drive gear splines, it's going to be a big seal if there is one (and I don't have one...)
I'm going to split the case tomorrow and find out.
Then replace the top crank seal, have a look at the piston/rings/cylinder, and hopefully put it back together.
