I picked up this little $10 gem today. It's a 1972 model with the D-433 engine. It's not in the best of shape, but is complete, down to the matching green wheels. Looks like I've got another project on my hands :)

Wow, that's a great find.

 I seem to recall that you said somewhere that it's hard to find old LBs in your area. You're doing pretty well, IMO.

Thanks for posting the photos. I never saw green wheels until this -- I like the look.

I got this mower from a small engine shop that actually had it thrown in a scrap pile that they were going to haul off later in the week. No, Lawnboys don't show up for sale much around here, but I guess they are out there if you go hunting.

Looking at the mower from the back:

It looks like it may have been self-propelled originally but the mechanism has been taken off. The height adjustment for the rear wheels looks like the 8232 (1974, self-propelled).

I shutter at the thought that this almost got thrown out. :confused2:

It appears that way, but it's stock. I checked out the drawings at lawnboy.com to see. I have 2, 8232's, and I'll more than likely be using a deck from one to replace this deck as it has some cracks and patch work....although it does give it character lol.

The patch on the chute looks like it could be a real problem -- ditto for any cracks that aren't tiny.

As far as paint goes, I like the look of a little of the alloy showing through the green. In antiques, people would call that a "distressed" look.

Got it down to the garage this evening. It tested good for spark, and after I sprayed some fuel into the carb, she fired up on the first pull. No kidding.... Then I cleaned out the tank, put some gas in, and after a minor air/fuel adjustment she was purring like a kitten :) I'll never understand why folks throw away good stuff.

The part I don't get is why someone who works on mowers wouldn't know that the old Lawn-Boys are collectible. Even if the deck is shot, there are still lots of good parts on an old bricktop.

That's a great lawnmower and my favorite lawnboy mower. About 12 years ago when I worked at the one shop I would rebuild and paint the decks and we sold them used for $175.00. The landscapers would argue over them.A nice light push mower and was very dependable.
