Engine 316 B series backfired

I have a 316 B series that while it was running fine (I was atilling at the time), it just backfired and quit.
Now I can't get it to start at all.
I have gas going into the carb, because if I turn the key on for a few RPM, it will POP a fire of gas about 8: from the carb,
The enging did smoke a bit before.
Where do I go from here?

Sounds like it could be a valve problem.

I just fixed a Honda tiller motor, doing the same thing. I took off the valve cover and found the exhaust cam follower to be broken. Easy fix, low cost.

Is there an easy way to determine if it's a valve problem?
I put new plugs in it, but the spark still looks very weak.

First I assume we are talking about close-to-same motors, so:

Take off the rocker arm cover, its a 4 bolt cover on top of the motor, Pull the spark plug out for ease of turning the motor by hand. Slowly turn the motor in the correct rotation and observe the cam turning and operating the rocker arms which open and close the valves. There is also an adjustment nut-bolt on the end of each rocker arm so you can adjust each valve stem/rocker arm clearance. It just may be that the valves need to be adjusted.

I do not know the correct valve setting, look in the owner's manual. Set the valves when the piston is TDC on the compression stroke.

It sounds like timeing and on mower engines timing can only go out if the flywheel moved on the main shaft. The movement can only be caused by a sudden stop of the engine and the key securing the flywheel in position is broken. Easy fix remove flywheel replace key
