Hi...a noob here...I just bought a used Craftsman lawn tractor with a 22hp B&S Intek V-twin. It will vibrate kinda severely, then run smoothly, then vibrate again. It seems to have plenty of power with or without vibration. I am at a loss. Getting ready to pull engine off of lawn tractor and tear down. I just pm'd the tractor...did oil & filter change, air filter change & a lot of other stuff. Any ideas?

I haven't run the engine through its rpm range, so I can't answer that question, yet. I will try to do that shortly. I think that engine idles at 1750 rpm, so I would say I have run it around 2000 rpm, so far.

Top end should be 3600 rpm I dont know if you should run it up that high without finding the problem first though.

You didn't mention whether or not the vibration is with the blades engaged or not, or just sitting still, or while driving.
I would take a look at the pulleys underneath. It sounds like something is loose. If the main engine pulley does not look bent or broken, I would try to pull the main belt off and run the engine again, and see if it vibrates. If not, then it's something in the pulley system. If that is the case, I would isolate them one by one till you find the culprit.

:smile: Good idea on the pulleys. Is that engine, solid or ISO mounted?
Make certain the engine is still solidly bolted into the frame. I have seen one instance where loose engine bolts caused this type of vibration. Otherwise, look for anything bent, and try to isolate each system one at a time, just like the others said. I'm betting on out of balance blades outside of physical damage from running over something.

Yea to me, if it were the engine itself, it would not be intermittent.
