Hello ,
I just bought a used 2003 Toro Z-Master 74179 with serial # Sl 230005085, Z 149 the hydraulic system seems to groan and very slow
response in steering and forward and reverse are like the pump is straining. I would like to know Wheel Motor or Hydro pump -
which one is bad.Where could i get replacement pumps at a reasonable price. What tools do i need to tackle the job .
I am new to Lawn Movers but i have been working on cars and trucks for 42 years.

Thanks to one and all for your time and advise.

Can you determine which side is the problem? If both are doing the exact thing I'd suggest trying to change the hydro filter n make sure it has the correct fluid.

Both sides and when trying to move forward or reverse it groans and moans struggling to function. I work on cars and i know the symptoms of pump failure and lack of fluid. My only thing i do not understand is Wheel Motor or Hydro pump - which one is bad.In cars there are no wheel motors. I do not mind investing in tools equipment
parts etc i paid $800 for the machine and i know that used equipment need parts and labor. I just bought the Mojack Pro lift for lawn mowers.

Thanking you

Synthetic lubricants such as Mobil 1 have teflon or ptfe that reduces friction which will decrease friction and increase the life of moving parts. I drive a 1997 Honda accord with 240000 miles i always use the best Synthetic oil such as royal purple and a k&n filter my car is first out from a stop lite with a fifty yard lead than others inline. I do not like cars 2000 and above nice to look lot of gadgets but made out of cheap material. You can call me an old timer have been working on cars since 1972.

I would love to buy a shop manual for the toro zero turn if available.

If both sides doing the same it has 2 pumps .I don't see how both fail at the same time. Check your belt. A service manual is available I think . I have a 07 z master with close to 1300 hours on it yet to have any hydro problems but on second motor.

IF both pumps are acting the same, it makes more sense to change hydro fluid & filter(s) & re-test, since the share the same hydro fluid reservior.
