i just got was told it was not working from first inspection the head was loose (im hope im right in saying the head where the piston goes up and down inside)

i removed the plastics and the gasket looked ok so i tightened up the screws all looked good with compression not lots but good i can nearly pickup the mechine with out the string pulling out of the starter emptied the fuel tank it was very dirty sat around for 2 years cleaned with fresh fuel put back together added new fuel put choke on and pumped the bulb to send the fuel through and the fuel would go up the pipe and then go back down in to the fuel tank (this is my problem getting fuel to the carb i will now say what i have done after)

after the fuel would not go through i was a bit stuck but wanted to see if the unit would just start not much point in playing if there was no hope of it running removed the plug and cleaned and gap looked good earthed it on the body and pulled it was good good few sparks so thats working droped a half a teapoon of fuel in the bore and put in the plug full choke pulled 2 times it sounded like it wanted to start so half choke did just run/show a few clouds of smoke and blades moved once back/forward so looks like it runs? theres hope i think

now any help on the carb please/ fuel problem i have removed the carb and diaphragm looked ok removed the pin and spring and the top part with the bulb and cleaned and used carbcleaner on all holes i can see all needed a clean but where clear when i finished but no luck ps have tryed a new fuel line as well did not make a differance

Wolf, Maybe some pros will respond to you. You reused an old head gasket? Should be new. The passage ways in the carburetor are tiny. If you have not softened the gruk and blown it out or chased the passageways with a thin soft (copper strand) probe you may still not be ready for business. Also some spark visible may not guarantee the coil is good. Try opening up the plug gap to see if spark will still jump. My limited rebuild attemp at trimmer showed that industry has made them throw aways after use. In my case 10 good years with a Ryobi. Then the replacement parts quickly added up to half or more the price of a new , sale item. By the way there should be reisitance when you use the pull rope. You are pulling against both crankcase and combustion chamber compression.

A lot of the newer box store trimmers are getting to the point of no repair. About two weeks ago got a warranty on a MTD Remington trimmer denied due to exceeding 75% of replacement cost of the unit. Replaced $7 fuel tank under warranty.

yes reused the original gasket it looked in good condition as the screws had just come loose and yes will replace at a later date but im thinking comprssion is not the problem i can just lift the whole mechine by the pull stater i normally use this as a gauge as to the compression if the starter pulls out before lifting the unit on smaller strimmers and chainsaws and such the comprssion is normaly to low to be useful

im thinking that there is air getting in some where or that the is a non return valve that stops the fuel from receding back in to the fuel tank the bulb is fine as have removed that and no cracks as blown in to it as well as pushing it at the same time so think thats ok and the fuel line replacement has not made a difference

im not that good at carbs most of the small amout of repairs i have done have mostly been easy repairs as my first one was a bad one in the end was piston rings and bore faulty got away with it emery papered the bore out and replaced the piston rings after the cost of carb cleaner new spark plug new fuel line add the cost of piston rings cost me in parts inc unit was ï £28 i sold it for ï £30 but was a good learning experience and it has taut me how far to go with the units before stopping and just using the parts

50 percent of the time it just needs a carb clean ,a wire put back on, new fuel or just a spark plug and its going again
but im in england and 90 percent of people use electric here as even a large house dont have that much land to mow and petrol stuff is few and the price that it all sells for is not great just one or two parts is as much as it it is to buy a good working 2nd hand one

but i only do this as as some thing to do and as long as it dont cost me money to have a play i would only be watching tv and getting something started and runing hearing that chug chug sound is music to me prob like a runner finishing that 26 mile run if you get my meaning i sure most of you agree

ps when i say trimmer i mean a hedge trimmer just so no confusion

Wolf, Sounds like you will make the proper decision. You are correct to state hedge trimmer for me as I am not familiar with them except as snap on accessory to grass trimmer.

Wolf, I am not versed in brand names, but don't recall seeing ALKO before. Is there another name we might know your machine by in US? I know the Japanese name their cars differently depending upon market. Some one help this person. :anyone:
