I have a 1995 MTD LT 12.5, 38 inch deck, with a 289707-0154 Briggs and Stratton 12.5 hp I/C engine. I believe my model number is 135M660G000. Everything runs fine, but I have an electrical question. Does this mower/engine combination have a DC rectifier/regulator, or is it all AC? I see no mention of a rectifier or regulator in my parts manuals (no ownerç—´ manual). I知 needing to add some LED lighting to it, and they require DC so that they aren稚 blown by the pulsing effect that AC has on them, since theyæ±*e diodes. Also, my ammeter on the mower dash jumps pretty wildly when running itç—´ always on the positive side of the scale, but the needle isn稚 steady: is this normal, too?
It just seems that the mower should have a DC rectifier/regulator somewhere because, as I understand it, the battery requires a DC source to charge it.
So, to sum up:
1. Do I have a rectifier/regulator? If so, where, and what does it look like?
2. Should my ammeter be steady or å±*umpy?
I suspect that you h.just have the diode in one of the wires coming out from under the flyweel. If it has the regulator, it will look like a small box mounted to the sheet metal around one of the cylinders. If you look at the wires coming out from under the flywheel, see if one has a shrink tube covered bump just above the connector. that is the diode that converts the power from AC to DC. The other wire should be AC for the head lights, with you can add a diode into to convert it to DC to run the LED's. the charging system is probable just the 3 Amp charge circuit, and the 5 Amp headlight circuit.
