18HP Opposed Twin Wiring Diagram

I’m making this post for a buddy of mine, he got his hands on a free John Deere 160 lawn tractor with no motor, and we had an old Agway lawn tractor laying around as well with an 18HP B&S opposed twin. We decided to remove the twin from the Agway and try to cram it into the 160, but all the wiring was ripped out of the Agway and we aren’t sure how to wire the ignition or charging circuit up, I was wondering if anyone knows the wiring on these so we can at least see if it even runs and so we can hook up a key later on.

It would be a lot easier to help you if you would post model and serial numbers for both the engine and tractor. Read Christmas Wish thread.

Well the old 160 diagrams are hard to read but yu would convert from a Kawasaki FB460V to the Briggs. Some rewiring will be necessary especial there is a different voltage regulation setup.
Here is the diagram for the 160 (Note for the LT160). Zoom in for wire colors. Older serial numbers use the same setup.

As for the Briggs opposed we got to figure which alternator (stator) setup it has wiring can be a little different.

I will definitely try to go snag the model number, and we can go from there.

Just went out to look for the model number, there is no tag or stamp anywhere on the engine or shrouds that I can see so I don’t know where to go from there

On the engine the numbers will probably be on one of the valve covers. On the tractor the numbers will probably be on the chassis behind the left rear wheel.

The tractor wiring we aren’t too worried about, he has ripped all pre existing wiring out so it’s got nothing currently. As far as the engine, it’s a flathead so it does not have valve covers. Typically the model and type numbers are stamped on a tag on the upper shroud, but I searched all over and can’t find any markings anywhere on the engine or shrouds.

Do you possibly have the numbers off the Agway, so we can possibly cross check against the tractor numbers.

Well see if we can figure which stator the engine has then. As you will have amperage problems if it has a dual circuit version due to the 160 having an electric PTO clutch.

He’s turning it into a race mower so PTO and all of that will not matter.

Unfortunately I believe he already scrapped it. He has big ideas but doesn’t quite think anything through first.
