18 HP B & S trouble running.

I have a late 90's murray mower with an 18hp B&S and right now it takes A LOT of finagling to keep it running. So far, i have:

Replaced all fuel lines

Cleaned out fuel tank

Replaced Carburetor

Replaced Starter

When i start it now, I have the choke fully engaged. It takes a long time (2-3 minutes) of me opening the choke up for it to run completely open. The whole time this is happening, the governor is kicking in and out a lot, and even with throttle adjustments, I can't seem to get it to idle properly. Also, when i put it into gear, the rpms go WAY down on the mower and it just about dies. This is just when i put it into gear, not when i let off the clutch. So i was wondering if taking the governor off would help it at all? And what could be the problem with the rpms dropping when i put it into gear?

Check for an air leak where the carb mounts to the block. To do this take a can of carb cleaner and spray all areas where air could be coming in and listen for a change in RPM's.

Okay i used engine degreaser because i didnt have any carb cleaner. but it fired right up. It did stall on me after about a minute of it running when i was in gear and almost died, like seriously thought i was gonna be pushing it, but came back. Think i need a new gasket between the block and carb?

If it changed RPM's when you sprayed around that gasket I think you found the problem. You will have to adjust the carb again after installing the new gasket. Good Luck.

wont he need to zero the governor after he installs the carb?

Not if he didn't change the linkage. If he has a tach he might want to check it.

ahh thanks,i was told to zero a mechanical goveror when a carb is removed and reinstalled,
