Hello,

I have a 16hp zero turn Toro. Brigs engine 286H77-0165E1, have been having trouble starting mower. Replaced soleniod, battery cables, and new battery. Started with fresh battery(300CA) fine, then when it sits for a while it acts as if battery is weak. I checked charging system and get 14Vdc when running. Have been having trouble and changed battery a couple of times. Is it possible that the charging system can damage a battery? The battery is only a week old.:frown:

I just posted this in another thread and it may help you.

I would do the following in this order. Check all connects and wires, are they loose, corroded, wires frayed, etc. Once you feel everything is in good shape continue. Fully charge the battery. Disconnect the negative battery cable and let sit for a day. If battery is discharged, bad battery, return. If battery is fully charged continue. Disconnect the plug on the back of the key switch and let sit for a day. If the battery is discharged we are going to look for a dead short in a component in the system. If the battery is fully charged, we have a confusing problem. Post back with results. Be sure to include model and serial numbers for both the unit and engine.

Only thing different for you, is that I would let it sit for a couple of days, instead of one. He had a little different problem.

 Seeing how it started with a fresh battery, I doubt that the valves has anything to do with it, but maybe. Take Rivets advice and run with it.

I had a similar problem with my Z500. The problem was in the safety starting system. It would turn over, but not start. I replaced the blade clutch switch and it went away.

Had same problem with my Briggs overhead valve engine and went through same procedure as you with exception of replacing the starter when the only problem with engine was that the valves needed adjusting. Exhaust valve movement is designed so they relieve compression so the starter has an easier time turning the engine, when valves are out of adjustment the starter has a hard time cranking the engine when the piston is on compression stroke. Simple job most anyone can do.
