I have a mtd yard machines with the 16.5 horse briggs and stratton engine and it has a very high idle upon start and running. Last year it started spitting and spuddering while running so my uncle and I tried to fix it, which in a way we did but afterwards it has a much higher idle and run speed than it used to. Just wondering if anyone had any tips/pointers to try and fix this?

Without knowing your model of engine. There is a idle speed adjustment screw at the top of the carb, just below the throttle shaft in the carb on the single cylinder engines, and on the twins it may be located next to the throttle shaft on the right side of the carb. Turn it out and see if the speed reduces.

Most are a silver colored screw with a phillips head. The other thing thing is some engines have an idle governor spring and in that case you may be better off allowing a repair shop to set the speed.
