15HP B/S issues

Hi everyone-I just found this forum and have a couple of questions that have me stumped. My older (12 yr.) Toro tractor is having "issues". I bought a new battery after it wouldn't start. Started fine, but was running a bit rough. Changed the plug- started fine the first time, but not the second. Took out the plug to check it. Cranked the engine without the plug-replaced the plug and it started fine. Next time-wouldn't even turn over. Repeated the procedure of removing the plug and re-installing. Started right up. Not sure what is going on with that. It acts like the Briggs 15hp motor is "stuck" until I pull out the plug.

Not sure if it's related, but while the engine was running, I started to check the oil, but when I unlocked the dipstick, the engine acted like it wanted to stall. Neve had any type engine do that. Wondering if there is something different about the Briggs engine that would cause this.

The mower has served us well, but maybe it's time to send it to the recycler. Any help would be appreciated.

Please post the engine model number so we can tell which Briggs 15hp engine you are talking about.

Sounds to me like you might need to adjust the valves. Here is a manual which should help.

Thanks I'll give it a try and see if it solves the problem.
