it's an 8 year old engine but has been pretty well maintained. Monday of this week it was doing fine...then it started running about half power even with the throttle moved up. Later on it started speeding up then slowing down. Then it just started running wide open no matter where I had the throttle.I can't see any thing hung, for instance the butterfly in the carb. Could it be the govenor is mal-functioning?

It is very possible that the governor is out of adjustment.
You might also check to see if there's any wiggle in the throttle shaft of the carb.
Any looseness,at all, will make it hunt this way.
Also make sure the air filter is clean.
Hope this helps.

thanks a lot....to get to the throttle shaft I had to remove the filter assembly, and just to look at it all seemed well until I lifted up on the throttle shaft. I could have removed it completely. after removing the carb and looking in the throat I found that the two screws holding the butterfly on was completely gone.To end this story, I took the screws out of an old 4 wheeler and they fit just fine. The mower is running like its old self and all is well!
