10547 DuraForce Gold 6.5hp with fuel in exhaust

I am new to LawnBoy, as this mower came with the purchase of the house.

I have a very smoky start, after many hard pulls. (Last season, after new plugs and cleaning, it started with one pull!) Also, even though the throttle is pulled all the way back, the engine doesn't slow down that much; yet it bogs down quite easily in some situations. (The blade is sharp.)

I came to ask a question about this, expecting the worst, but finding, in various posts, seemingly easier and less costly answers.
Thank you for the forum and all your friendly participation.

I am now quite sure that my carb needs a good cleaning, etc., and not the fear of worn engine ring!

God Bless
Doug

The carburetor float is set too low and the needle valve is not shutting off. that causes fuel to run into the block causing vapor lock of the piston and filling of the transfer tube that connects the block to the muffler. If you go to lawn boy .com and look up your model it will have the toro e engine manual. it will show you exactly how to set your float height. Don't give up on it that is a relatively easy fix, but also be prepared to start working on this mower yourself because most lawn mower shops will laugh at you when you take it to them or they will charge you a fortune. Its a 2 cycle so they are very simple to fix. For the power issue you might want to think about the briggs and stratton jet change or a full rejet by drilling out the main and idle circuit both. i have that exact machine and it has been rejetted and it is an awesome machine! good luck!!

The float needle and seat are definitely leaking, causing any fuel left in the tank after mowing to drain into the block and wind up in the transfer chamber. I would remove the carb and clean the exterior, it has alot of nooks and crannies that you need to clean with an old toothbrush. Replace the needle and seat AND add a simple fuel shutoff valve you can buy at Meijers. My 10323 (same engine) runs better than new after performing this simple repair.

AND add a simple fuel shutoff valve

Yes, it already has a shutoff valve, just haven't used it day-to-day! Was only using it for over-wintering...

Thanks for the input, you and Jeff (below) seem to know this engine!
