Hey all,

First off I want to start by saying this...Ive looked everywhere on the web to try figure this out on my own and I'm still looking so any help would be appreciated!

I just picked up a 2006 John Deere 102 lawn tractor and it doesn't have anything but 5th gear? I can't get it to switch at all...feels almost like the selector is disconnected. That said I've followed it down to the tranny and it is connected, it turns freely in the tranny.

Has anyone else had this issue with a gear drive trans? If so what fixed it? Are gear drive transmissions easy to work on?

Thanks in advance! Any advice will help.

Can you crawl under the unit and give us a name and model number the the tranny. Sounds to me like the shift keys are locked up. Not that hard to repair if you have the time and patience. If you do open it up be ccareful, as there are many parts that have sharp edges.

thank you for the quick reply! I was looking at it last night and I remember seeing a tag that said Spicer so I know its a Dana /Spicer but I'm not sure of the model number I will have to look when I get home this evening

John Deere - Parts Catalog

Look at this and see if I have looked up the correct model.

If the keys were locked up, then the shifter wouldn't move, so I doubt that is the problem.

Now in this blowup, part number 4 is what moves the ring that pushes the shift keys back and forth into the other gears, so this is likely boogered up, or it is loose at the top where the bracket on the outside bolts onto it, so check there first.

Check for parts availability before going too deep, Foote stuff is getting harder to find.

I know, I know, they were bought out by Spicer/Dana, but Foote is the Lawn mower trans division.. They have almost phased that name out totally anymore.

The part number on this trans is AM134770

Fish i'm not able to see the diagrams you have pulled up? or linked to...when i click on the link it brings up a search bar on the JD website?

Do you think its something broken that i will have to replace or could it just be jammed...or will i not know until i break into it? lol How hard is it to remove the trans?

sry for all the questions...i'm a fairly decent shade tree mechanic but when it comes to small engine/lawn tractors i'm not familiar at all.

thanks again!

Just go up to the find/search button and type in your tractor's model

ok i found the transmission pic you were talking about. Is there a wright up on how to remove the trans or is it a pull parts until it comes off?

anything special i should know before i tear into it? Other then the parts for it...i assume i could order any of them online.

Don't know about availability, just start with that part number 4, don't actually order it, just see if you can. BTW, they will take your money and string you along for months, when they know that it is nla.

as i was looking at that diagram is it possible that the detent spring is broken? that spring is supposed to get the trans into gear by pushing in the ball bearing each speed correct? or am i just shooting in the dark lol
