This mower is a series 5 and from about the mid '80s. The engine appears original. The first two digits in the code # dictate what year the engine was made. Most likely the same year as the mower or the previous year.

Check the yoke (the thing with the big slot that rocks back and forth when clutching) for excessive wear. They tend to get notches worn in them in the most used speeds, usually the lower gears. The more notch, the less tension pressing against the drive disc.

If you want a name for it, how about "Larry". Venturing a guess as to what it is, probably linkage for the deck height adjuster. My experience is mainly from about series 8 and older, but I think that's what it is.
