I used to be a sears repair tech. Oddly enough I saw this problem all the time. I’d try loosening the gas cap when this occurs again and see if problem stops. If so, get a new gas cap. The vents get plugged up especially if it’s dusty where you mow.

54 inch deck, mower goes in and out of a “ mode” intermittently. Acts just like you went into deep grass, bogs down, no power at all, won’t accelerate if you push down on pedal. I can reproduce this in a parking lot. Has nothing to do with grass. It will come out of this mode and just be humming...
