    Old 5HP Rototiller fouling plugs.

Dry black carbon on the spark plug is the result of a rich mixture. Excess oil will make the black carbon have a oily, wet appearance.

    Old 5HP Rototiller fouling plugs.

There is no "psuedo-compression" release. The exhaust valve cam is made to hold the exhaust valve slightly open to release some pressure as the piston comes up making the engine easier to crank. The valve closed just before combustion to provide full power. If the valve lash is too much the...

    generac 006720 generator

ILENGINE hit on it. The governor on a generator is critical to maintain AC frequency, i.e. cycles. Home AC runs on 60 cycles. As an example it is what keeps your clock on time. If the cycles are off, your plug-in AC clocks will run fast or slow. All electronics depends on the cycles being...

Craftsman DGS 6500 - clicks but won't start

In my 70+ years of driving and repairing I've seen this many times. The battery posts are corroded. The voltage gets to the solenoid, but not the amps, i.e. the solenoid closes and clicks, but the starter doesn't turn. To understand electricity, think of it in terms of water. Voltage is the...

    Replacement battery

Chose the higher cranking amps for the extra power. By the way, if you own a single engine general aviation airplane or know someone who does, you can use a used airplane battery that is no longer adequate for the airplane. Most of these airplanes use 100 to 180 hp engines and require a...

Craftsman DGS 6500 - clicks but won't start

When you checked for corrosion were you looking at the solenoid connections or the battery posts. This sounds like corrosion on the battery posts. Remove the battery cables and clean away all corrosion. Use baking soda in water (tablespoon in a half cup and dissolve) to immerse the battery...

    Cub cadet zero turn

Shut off the mower blades, push down the brake pedal, set the park brake handle and get off. the engine will continue running and the tractor is safe.

Grass isn't cut between the blades.

The grass you are cutting doesn't seem that tall but try it on shorter grass first. If the stripe is still there, it appears that the center blade is not cutting, i.e., the center blade is not turning. You did say you replaced 3 blades, right? Is the center spindle stuck? Make sure the blade...

What's wrong with my Honda Lawnmower? Almost pulled my arm off! Repair? New mower?

Make sure the rope is not hanging up. I've had that happen. To check, pull the rope slowly and see if it pulls all the way with surges of compression. If it hangs up hard pulling slowly, release and try several times. If it hangs every time, it could be the rope recoil ball ratchet. But before...

RPM for a 22" residential push mower

High rpm's are hard on your engine. I have a 22inch push mower that runs slowly, maybe 2200 rpm, guessing. It cuts good, but the big plus is that I bought it new in 1990 and it is still running as good as it did 30 years ago. Of course I keep it in a shed and do annual maintenance. Keeping...

Murray 30 inch rear rider only sputters in low/mid idle

I agree with dirt in the gas tank that got sucked into the carb. If there is dirt in the tank you need to clean it, then take off the carb and clean the jets with spray carb cleaner. Wear goggles, when you spray into a jet hole it can come out aimed at your face. Carb cleaner in the eyes is not...

Help. John Deere D140 wont start.

You didn't say if you disengaged the blade. I had a repair call once and that is what it was. He lifted the blade, but not all the way. When he asked what he owed me, I said $50, but it would be free if he didn't mind being embarrassed. He said, Oh damn, what did I do???

What They Don't Want You to Know! Insider Secrets and Tips to Shopping at Harbor Freight

I don't trust the Chinese to anything for our benefit. Temu stuff looks like junk and the extraordinary low price implies it really is. Temu is just another example of Tik Tok. Sometimes you have to buy a Chinese product, if I can find it made somewhere else, I'll pay the extra money.

    Blade-balance oddity

If your mower blade is magnetized, it could depend on close you are from the north or south poles where magnetic dip may be sensed. Or if the blade is quickly accelerated or decelerated along a latitudinal or longitudinal plane turning error may occur as in a compass.

    2015 Toro v-twin won't start

I am thinking it is out of time. Spark plug wires reversed? Other timing issues? I saw this happen on an old pickup truck in 1976 when one of my employees took out the distributor to install new points and re-installed the distributor 180 degrees out of phase.

    Replacing broken Craftsman sockets

Probably true about the cheaper less carbon steel. But thin wall is more practical in tight places. I have had Craftsman tools for 68 years and they are all still good. Use an impact socket with an impact wrench. I have cracked some sockets from cheaper brands.

    Craftsman lawnmower B&S engine replacement.

I agree with 'J', A new mower is probably less than a new engine. I've done this before with a 5 hp string mower. The replacement engine was $310. A new mower was $289. Unless you want a project for your grandson?

Honda GXV 530 must have choke on when throttle is past halfway.

It is not the valve adjustment if you did it right the first time. Not the carb either if both carbs have the same issue. It is not getting enough fuel. Is the tank clean? Check the fuel lines for cracks that can suck air, maybe inside the tank if it runs good on a full tank, but falters...

    OIL LEVEL

As I said before, you need to start the engine to fill the filter. Then you have to wait to let the oil settle. Many times the oil sticks to the fill tube and the dip stick will pick up oil off the fill tube sidewalls showing over full. It settles faster if the oil is hot. Let it set for 5...

    Kohler compression release

I agree with hlw49, adjust the valves. The compression release can be on the cam. If the valves are too loose, the cam lobe won't open the exhaust valve and the starter will lug down. On Briggs, these valves must have only .003 to .005 clearance. I have repaired these with success.

    Picture of Carburetor

If you remove the filter base plate, access to the carb is a lot easier. Another tip, take cell phone pictures before you take it apart - springs, wires, belts, etc. or see if a buddy has one like it.

    Carb float not sitting right

If you are holding the carb upside down, the float is on upside down. The float looks like it is on upside down because the top of the float is usually level with the carb body when the carb is held upside down and gravity holds the needle valve closed. The angle position of the float is wrong...

    STIHL hedgetrimmer HS82 T and R : carburator "H" screw setting???

I have been working on 2 -cycle engines since they came out in yard tools. The factory L, H, and LA settings, i.e. screw turns from closed are a beginning point to get your engine running and keep it running. Adjust the idle (L) screw first. If the engine dies, adjust the LA (idle speed) until...

Craftsman LT2000 -> Does not Start... Help Needed.

I noticed you got gasoline to the carb, but is the carb clean? Try to start with starter fluid, just a spritz, if it fires, clean the carb. Nine times out of ten that is why an engine won't run. Could check for spark. Fixing that is another issue. If the starter tries to turn the engine...

Husqvarna seat slides out of place

Take the the two bolts out. I think they are for shipping. They bend the seat floor plate in the middle causing the back end of the seat plate to bend down creating less engagement with the seat handle ratchet. When you take the bolts out, the plate stays flat and engagement is better. You...
