Bert, My understanding of the system is that the VR rectifies the AC current into DC then regulates it to +/- 14V DC to charge the battery. Without the VR plugged in, why should the middle wire show anything? Doesn't it work as a pathway to provide DC from the VR back to the battery? Also...

Thanks Bert. The VR bolts onto the metal shroud just under the flywheel. I did make a seperate wire and attached to the engine block. I did a test with it unplugged, got 0.1 V DC at the center wire at WOT, 40+ volts AC on the outside 2 wires.

I'm aware that the pistons need to come out. I was referring to the crank and cam shafts. Specifically, is there room to remove / replace and properly torque the rod cap bolts.

In a word, no. I'm not sure it's not just valve stem seals. I did have a bent exhaust pushrod about 400 hours ago. Would that give any indication of valve (or seal) issues?

That's what I don't know. It's a FR651V on the airfilter cover but the spec tag on the engine shroud is FX730V-CS12 (which is what he posted online) which is obviously wrong. (It is not an FX style engine). My pics are too large to post here.

10,000 hours? Wow, that is the first time I've every heard that number. Not saying you're wrong, just never heard anyone say that I should expect that many hours from a mower engine. I pull and replace the outer filter when the indicator says to do so.

Blue, def oil. Uses about 1/2 qt every 10 or so hours. I change oil & filter every 50 hrs in all my machines.
