Harbor Freight AC volts test: Set your HF vom on AC volts and with the engine not running test the bat voltage and see what reading you get. The meter should read zero. Some of them cheap vom testers will read AC volts when when testing a DC voltage and non-filtered DC voltage will cause them...

    Rear Tire Change

And like dana a says with the tire off you can get that type patch that has the plug with patch attached or a large chemical patch and then install a $15 tube if working on it yourself and the tire is not dry rotted. If not doing the tire repairs yourself buying and paying someone else is less...

Can a governor spring cause smoking?

You asked: I'm wondering if this could be pre OHV? Probably pre OHV. Being a Briggs 11 hp probably single cylinder L-Head, (valves in head) and the model type code will be on the air cowling tag. If it's a OHV the info will be stamped into the top of the valve cover. You do need to pull...

Can a governor spring cause smoking?

Can you post up a model number and serial number on that old Murray? The reason I ask is I have one and cannot locate any info. Not knowing the engine model, type and code. On yours make sure that the oil has not become contaminated with gas again and if was ran with contaminated gas before it...

    Honda EM2500 generator

Not exercising gasoline operated standby by emergency generators every once in awhile is usually what makes them not ready to go when needed. Honda EM2500 generator

When it started smoking was the smoke blue or black, like black soot. The reason I ask is oil smoke is blue, running rich will be black soot. Was the engine running smooth? Does that unit have the auto idle, where it will idle if a load is not placed on the unit and a switch set to AUTO? If...

Briggs 16HP Vanguard carb / fuel problem

I noticed in your last pictures that it appears that the Low idle jet still has the plastic limiter adjust cap on it even though you got it removed. If it's not adjusting for a good smooth low idle you might have to remove the plastic limiter to get a full adjust. Do not try to break the...

    battery overcharging

I would think about checking the DC charge amps. By reading amps you can see if the battery amps tapers back after starting the tractor or if the amps are ACTUALLY staying high. If after about 5-10 min's of high rpm operation the DC amps should go to 5 amps or less typically 3 amps or so with a...

Briggs 16HP Vanguard carb / fuel problem

As slomo says: That green corrosion not coming clean from your boiling and cleaning is also a clue that the passages inside are not getting clean plus the outside of the carb is not even cleaning itself. Briggs 16HP Vanguard carb / fuel problem

Just couple hints. I've never seen that exact carb but couple hints to check. Most are just straight through to feed the lower portion of...

Briggs 16HP Vanguard carb / fuel problem

Yes, that is just a bowl drain. #254 Your High speed jet is the one that screws into the side of the carb in your picture 2. When you put the carb/bowl back on the carb the area below this jet to the bottom of the bowl has to be sealed good when the bowl is installed or gas will bypass this...

    Honda EM2500 generator

The reason it would pull hard is hydrolock. Raw gas on top of piston. You could remove that carb and then remove the bowl and you will probably find that the float is stuck in the down position. You don;t have to rebuild your carb just turn the carb upside down back and forth and gett the float...

Briggs 16HP Vanguard carb / fuel problem

The reason I asked is he said in a previous post few pages back he placed his finger over a leaking welch plug and it made no difference. (so he just moved on) He needs to re-check/re-seal the welch plugs especially after using high pressure compressed air into the carb.

Few pages back you said you see a welch plug leaking air. How did you re-seal the welch plug? Starter issue or what?

Briggs V Twin 22HP oil leak under both cylinder heads

Strange that both were leaking. Engine must have been excessively hot or the previous gaskets were not torqued in proper sequence and to torque specs or someone previously removed the heads and re-installed using the old gaskets. Head gaskets are pricy now days and some/most are China type.

Doubt it's warped enough that it's the heads/block. Those use the thicker type head gasket. If it's the head gasket on both it's probly not been torqued in the proper sequence. You can check a head by lapping on a piece of glass, usually
