In order for the folks here to help, supplying your model number and serial number would be great. There are several reasons for your belt to break. Bad pulleys or spindles. Grass or twigs getting into the pulleys. Wrong belt. Belt tension not right. A sharp place or gouge in a pulley. ETC.

It is a poor design. Corrosion and grass buildup will cause all sorts of problems with those spindles. Blade and spindle replacement will cost more than the 6 point star blade and spindle replacement. I would definitely yank that system off during the first blade change.

Yes, the spindles and blades will need to be replaced. Mower Deck Parts Plus sells conversion kits. I don't know of the quality. There may be a MTD Star spindle that will work. Of course it will need to be matched to the quick attach spindle length and bolt pattern.

You haven't said whether or not there is a mulching kit installed on the mower deck. The blades must be installed with the cutting edge towards the ground and the wings mounted towards the top of the deck.
