Not every dealer is honest and they can lie to your face to make extra $$. Everyone has had it happen, that is why I fix things myself anymore and don't get screwed. YouTube is a great place to learn, something we did not have growing up. See ya!

Time for a new short block or like others have said, bore it oversized. Putting new rings in this is just asking for reputational troubles and will tear up the new rings. Live, Learn, fix it right and move on.

Good callout on the ignition. At least in my experience, coils love to act up when they get hot. Went thru this with a neighbor on his MTD. Ran great for 10 mins, then just died and was a coil issue.

Don't overlook the Valve lash! The valve lash will change slightly from when the engine is cold vs when it heats up (like it is 100 in NC now). If the tolerance is not correctly set, you may have a valve that is not closing all the way to the seat. Check your TDC Valve lash on the ignition...
