    Selling Used mowers

I refuse to negotiate until the buyer (or agent) has checked out & had a go with the mower/generator/brush cutter - only then can we "dicker". This gets rid of most "tyre kickers"/time wasters and removes any future arguments about the machines capacity to deliver the goods. I don't do...

    dieseling engine when shut down

The term "DIESELING" is usually used to describe an engine that continues to run after ignition turned of due to SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION. Spontaneous combustion is usually due to carbon build up in the cylinder, that is glowing red hot at the time the ignition turned off. The red hot carbon...

Putting a little Oil in cylinder before initial start of new small engine.

I have never put oil directly into the cylinder of a new engine - Remember, as soon as that engine fires/starts, any oil in the cylinder/exhaust/inlet will be burnt off - there will be significant smoke, which may make you feel good or not, as the case may be. 😈

22 horse Briggs & Stratton Poulan PRO will only start with help of a starter Fluid

I guess you mean the lack of adequate choke. Note: I have had an engine repair, where it would only run with the choke on - this is a classic carburettor blockage symptome. 😈

    Bad Boy Idler Pulleys

I grease my idler bearing periodically, with high molybdenum concentration grease. I use a hypodermic needle, modified with a grease nipple, to get past the seals - you can purchase the same idea on line. 😈

    B&S Oil Filters

Friend Hammermechanicman, " Your statement, above, is substantially correct I am old enough to remember when detergents in engine oil were only used in diesel engines. In fact we were warned against detergent oils for petrols - dire consequences would result etc etc.. Then came the advice - if...

22 horse Briggs & Stratton Poulan PRO will only start with help of a starter Fluid

It may be time to remove/dismantle the carburettor. Clean with carburettor cleaner & compressed air. Make sure all jets/aperture's are open/free from gum. Reassemble/fit and try again. 😈

    Bad boy

Sounds like old fuel has gummed up the carburettor. Remove carb. , dismantle, clean thouroughly with carby clean & compressed air. Check ALL jets/apertures are free from gum. Reassemble/fit & try again. Really suborn gum can often be dislodged by rodding with copper wire. 😈

    Vibrations on my ZT34

Mulch kits = marketing gimmick that uses more hp/fuel to do the same job as the standard/blade deck. 😈

22 horse Briggs & Stratton Poulan PRO will only start with help of a starter Fluid

An engine that must be started with " Starter Fluid Aerosol" has a problem that needs to be sorted out. You risk further damage with the habitual use of a starter aerosol (mostly ether). 😈

    B&S Oil Filters

Guys Guys - Beware the marketing department. All you hear/read is not necessarily as portrayed - a healthy dose of scepticism will go a long way.

    B&S Oil Filters

I am told that synthetic oils perform better, under hot conditions (eg air cooled engines), than straight mineral oils. An oil filter will do absolutely nothing to improve the performance of an oil. The filters job is to remove contaminants - mainly metal. Consider; I have used straight 30W...

    ZD21 fuel level sensor

These sort of fuel gauges/sensors are, for the most part, unreliable. Yous your eyeball or a calibrated pace of dowel/dip stick 😈

You should have told him that sharpening the blades has no significant benefit, other than to the blade supplier 😈

Oil Change at Beginning of Season or End of Season?

The only significant "impurities" the crankcase oil may collect is water vapour. The next time you use the machine AND it gets to its loaded (working) running temperature, for at least 30 minutes, the water vapour will be driven off. I live in Australia (opposite seasons to you). I have...

    B&S Oil Filters

Thats very interesting. The B&S Yellow oil filters PN 696854 is 28 micron with 96 sq/in of media. This is twice the media surface area, of the same external sized Short Black 492932. Yes more pleats could squeeze in more media but twice as much, sounds a little far-fetched. The Yellow filters...

    B&S Oil Filters

What is the knowledge base that informs your statement? 😈
  19. S

    B&S Oil Filters

You suggest that the filter media will catch finer particle (smaller micron). If this be correct then its likly the filter will; Compared with say the Long Black, raise oil pressure, by restricting oil flow Block sooner (shorter service life) & further raise oil pressure, by catching more...

    B&S Oil Filters

SOOOoooooo! The consensuses would seem to be that the B&S Yellow & Orange oil filters are a marketing gimmick😈
  21. S

    B&S Oil Filters

"Extended oil filter life" Not oil filter life. B&S are claiming an extended oil service interval from 50 -100hr oil change, with yellow & orange oil filters. 😈

    B&S Oil Filters

Sorry ILENGINE , I don't see how your comments give me understanding of why B&S recomend three diffrent (?) oil filters for the same engine. Are you sort of saying its a marketing gimmick and there is no functional difference between the three filters? 😈

    B&S Oil Filters

The Yellow is what I have order - same as fitted when new. The Orange has the same descriptor "High Efficiency...." as Yellow. The Maintenance Schedule; Black filter - oil & filter replace 50 hrs Yellow & Orange filter - oil & filter replace 100 hrs So no benefit, real or imagined with the...

    B&S Oil Filters

Thanks MParr - this is a customers near new engine, in a not so new chassis (origional B&S dropped a con rod). With customers that have near new equipment, I tend to fit OM parts (B&S/Ferris in this case). Still waiting on an informed answer as to why B&S specify no less than 3 oil filters...

    B&S Oil Filters

Thanks Auto Doc's, "...slightly better filtering media..." In general engine filters are judged on their ability to remove contaminants, down to a certain size (micron), while not unduly restricting flow (surface area) For the most part filters remove solids ie products (metal) of...

    B&S Oil Filters

Hi, Servicing a Ferris 400s with B&S 440000 engine. Manual shows three suitable oil filters; Standard Black PN 492932S High Efficiency Yellow PN96854 High Efficiency Orange PN796576 The last two have extended oil change intervals. Is this a marketing gimmick?? Anyone know what is the real...

    diesel z fuel gauge

You could just work out fuel used per hour of operation. Time elapse, from start, will then give you a fairly accurate fuel used/remaining. Simple! he only failure point is the operators inattention. 😈

Toro Wheel Horse 17hp Gear Box

Hi, Old Toro Wheel horse, 14 hp, Model No 71283, Serial No 240000104? Does anyone know the make & model of the gearbox (GB), recommended oil & quantity. The mower is going well, however there is a very slow leak from the GB & today there seemed to be an unusual noise from that direction. I...
