That is a push mower... Is this really worth the time or are you looking for a project with your grandson? Check your local repair shop and see if you can get a motor off a discard /abandoned unit.

I use a Kubota with a Kawasaki engine. Going on 30 years with regular maintenance and general repairs.

I tend to agree with shadetree1, maybe check for short to ground on the deck knob wiring, can you unplug it?
