Thanks for all the replies...I found the culprit.....a bad seat safety switch....actually it was not plugged in all the way......I am not the original owner, so, maybe someone was trying to diable it?????

but when I pull up on the mower switch it starts turning the blades and then shuts off the motor. I can try the switch for a few seconds and when I turn it off the motor picks back up if I don't let it die.
