The drive belt pulley moves, and I think that is what is throwing the belt. The alignment is off too, belt to bottom pulley, not idle pulley.

I don't hear any knocking, thankfully. The smoke just gets worse as time goes on. Then shutting it down and cooling off, it will go away. It's only when it reaches a certain temp, then poof!

It did - had quite a bit of smoke coming out when the dipstick was removed.

The loud grinding noise could also be magnets rubbing against your stator, ultimately shorting wiring. Do you see any black, magnetic fragments under your flywheel? Can you turn it by hand?

Is your deck belt in one piece? Is your engine pulley spinning when you engage but the belt's not moving?
