Thank you " F" for the recommendation of the CC XT2. Someone else [ not from here ] mentioned the XT2 in 42" . I looked up both & will forward the info to her. John Deere is OUT due to the horrible service/attitude from a couple of dealers, that are the closest.

We all know that they are not the best made mowers, since they mostly target lower priced, consumer products. MTD makes a LOT of different brands ,too. Comparing MTD makes of lawn tractors, let's say with 42-48" decks , rate the current name branded from BEST to WORST, in quality. #1. =

I don’t know what happened but old mowers used to be turned off by shorting out the spark plug with a steel strap. You could remove the rubber boot from the plug wire & attach a metal terminal. I will look for another picture.

Can you make a spark plug ground like this ?

If you buy, or get a FREE non-running mower , it can cost you more than it is worth to get it ready for sale . So many have bad transmissions or engines.

As Scrubcadet suggested above . Check the oil level . I don't doubt it is overfull & the oil is diluted with gas. Do a sniff of the dipstick.

There is a retired small engine repairmen here who wanted to work part- time, but be able to make some extra cash. I agree that it is still in the carb. I take a wire twist tie, burn off the plastic or paper on it, then use it to clean out all the tiny holes you can find.

The new filter should have an arrow on it to show which way the fuel flows, so install it that way. I have a #1529 which is the same but bigger. I am not sure about yours , but some gas tanks are a bugger to remove.

Just how MUCH oil is it using ? Say, how much does it use in 1 hour of cutting grass ? If it is not too bad, a little thicker oil might help. Oil is still pretty cheap.

I don't know your terrain but here in Florida, I cut about as much sand as I do grass. Blades will get dull pretty quickly, so I only buy good blades.

I use an old mower , a CC 1529 that runs & cuts fine. But, I just ran across a nice LTX1046 KW with 21hp Kawa engine. It is a 2012 in good condition except for some surface rust on top of deck. No holds, yet. How good is this mower ?

A 21” self propelled mower is all I would want for such a small yard.

Fuel system problem. You may have to clean/replace fuel lines, carb, & tank, then add a filter.
