Actually it's not as bad as you might think, the very FIRST thing is to get your CAMERA !! IF.. you take your time, study the things you are disassembling, note where springs and linkages and how they mount/connect take LOTS N LOTS of pics !! write down what needs to be replaced/ repaired, and...

I have had 3 mowers with the Briggs SINGLE cylinder OHV engines, 2 were the 17.5 HP models, & 1 was a 15.5 HP, both 17s will ALMOST ALWAYS backfire on shut-down regardless of throttle position (fast or idle) it has so far never caused an issue other than scarin the hell out of the animals...

IF ... YOU are going to do this carb removal & replace, FIRST thing you need is your camera take pics (tons of em) of everything you do, it will become your re-assembly manual, especially any LINKAGES & SPRING connection points .. (see examples) .............. Sometimes the pics DON'T...

A fuel shut-off valve helps a few things, it will let you remove the fuel tank for any purpose (cleanining) when valve is closed, and prevents fuel from filling your engines oil sump if your carb float needle sticks in open position also changing fuel filter with fuel in the tank, just have to...

Your engine info ( Model,type, & code numbers ) would help, but it sounds as though you need to adjust the valves ASSUMING it's an OHV model engine see attached info.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PEUt_KAcYk&t=21s .. if you have OHV engine .. numbers located here on the valve cover

Read part way down this page and click on ( Engine Mounting Hardware PDF ) in red letters..your engine most likely requires the SELF-TAPPING fasteners, may have to use an impact driver / screw gun .. VERY SLOW & CAREFULLY...

IF.... you decide to go for a replacement trans., you can check here every so often, they are reputable Co. several members have bought from here with satifaction, me among them, also there is usually a fair amount on EVIL-bay.. be careful at that one, and always check the Farm & Garden section...
