Look on the battery and see when it was manufactured. A lot of stores have old stock and don't keep them charged up. Are you sure it was not rebuilt?

You might try running it with the gas cap off to see if it runs ok. The breather hole or rubber flap valve in the cap may be plugged up. Does the hole have a white deposit around it?
