After I re-seated the valve seat, some center-punching and lapping, all is well.
Valve chamber - intake valve is stuck open, causing the engine to backfire through the carb.
The valve seat is holding hte valve open. I fixed this by re-seating it and hitting it with a center punch where it meets the block.
The valve stuck at the start of the season, had to re-seat the valve-seat
