I tried that approach and it made for a poor reinstallation. Had to do the job twice and the cover is tweaked now. Would have been quicker and easier to just remove the engine.
 
slomo, you better get your eyes checked. That is a vacujet carb, not pulsajet. There is no pump, so no diaphragm. You’re sending the OP in the wrong direction.
 
Slomo, please learn about vacujet carbs. I don’t know where you have gotten your knowledge about how they work, you better throw it away. They are about the easiest carbs to clean, plus the mixture adjusting needle controls the amount of fuel going from the pickup tube into the air horn. Boiling the carb will ruin your plastic pick up tube.
 
This coming from someone who can’t tell the difference between a vacujet and pulsajet carb. Surprised you haven’t told him that cleaning the cooling fins would help him solve the problem. I hope the OP ignores your posts, as they won’t help his cause.
 
gas cap appears to be free of debris. Besides, right now, the starter coil/spring assembly is my main problem. I was hoping to get to it this weekend, but no luck. Will try next weekend. Looking at removing the engine off the frame, best way to me. Thanks, people.
 
Finally got around to this-m unbolted the engine from frame (4 bolts). Pulled off the cover to the pull start rope/spring assbly. The rope was stuck, would not pull loose at all. Then I uncrimped the 2 tabs holding down the round spring unit and the whole thing sprung out and got all tangled up , impossible to reassemble. So, I figured I will look into buying a new one. Never did this before. Do the new ones pop in without the spring jumping out, and getting all tangled up again? Anyone know which kind I need to order for my machine? Are they universal?

Will one of these listed here be compatable?

Thanks, Riv. Update: removed engine, rewound the coil spring BY HAND, and reinstalled. I feared I could never do this! Rope was jammed, so I restrung it nicely. Cleaned all with engine cleaner, shined up the base, Drained the gas, and found water in the tank! New gasoline, and engine started right up. Ran nicely, No stall. Nice clean, restored edger! This is a nice machine, solid, heavy, Made in USA.
Anyway, thanks to all here who helped.
