I happen to be a Southern sympathizer. I see the Civil War as a war of States' rights, versus the monstously powerful Fed that the Rebels didn't like the idea of.
I think that making slavery the main issue was a political move, to make the North look like it had the moral high ground. All the noise about that meant nobody noticed the fed growing to the point of having power it was never meant to have. Still has an unconstitutional amount of power, based on the original document, IMHO.
However, that said - I don't think secession was the answer, and if the Rebels had won, I don't think America would have ever become the economic and millitary powerhouse that we became.
