Pulled the crank and it had a hole on the flywheel side!
Connecting rod was gone!
I straightened the cup-like plug and and pushed it in place at the connecting rod end of the crankshaft. Without the plug oil won't reach the flywheel end of the crank. It appears that the way the crank was machined, a plug was necessary. A spring clip like the one holding the crankpin in probably would have been a good idea. This would prevent the plug from popping out like it did.
