We did a similar thing with apple trees
the lower branches got grafted into each other as soon as they overlapped
Must admit it does look good and the fence never needs painting or replacing a pailing .

Dogs have zap collars
Fence was to keep the cattle out and it worked really well
While they could have walked strait through, the push against it, it feels solid so they walk away .
Took about 5 years before the star pickets & wire could be removed .
So then we had a fence + 19 varieties of apples + windbreak + food for the cattle when the grass was poor ( did not like it but they would eat it if there was nothing else available .
Again a case of work smarter not harder
Was still there the last time I passed by but the property was rented & the renters obviously had not bothered to prune the trees which were near 20' tall .
