I have an older Briggs and Stratton engine (Model-171432) (Type-1123 01) (Code-9506021B) that is in need of some valve guide bushings and I could use some help in selecting the correct parts. The engine is an aluminum block with a cast iron sleeve and appears to have the sintered gray color bushing on the exhaust side and the intake side has no bushing at all. I have read several articles saying I can use a 231218 brass service bushing to repair both the intake and exhaust but I have also read either a 230655 or 261961 bushing could also be used. I understand that some of the bushings need to be finish reamed after installation and others do not so I'm wondering which bushings would best suit my application. I just want know what the right part # is for the exhaust side as well as the intake so I can get the parts ordered. I could really use some help clearing up the confusion as to which parts to use and what installation procedure entails. Thanks, Dan

Get yourself a Briggs manual, MS 4750-101, which contains part numbers and repair instructions for your engine. To do the repair you are thinking of doing, you’ll need some special tools, so read it over carefully before investing any money, as you’ll probably never use them again. Another thing you might try is contacting your local repair shop and see if they will rent you the tools. Find the oldest one in your area, as the young guys will not know what you are talking about.

If they are tight in the head, take them to a head shop and get K Liners fitted
Make SURE they under stand it is an AIR COOLED engine so needs to have the running clearances specified in the manual Rivets mentioned above.
Doing guides in small alloy heads is a lot more difficult than most would think and badly done will mean turning up custom guides the reaming them after fitting, the cost of which is generally greater than replacing the head.
K Liners should set you back $ 20 to $ 50 a piece fitted.

Bert, I have yet to see valve guides in a side valve engine to be in the cylinder head. Must be a truely unique design.
Since the 19232 Valve Guide Repair Tool Kit is NLA I personally will not rent or loan it out as most will never return loan or rented tools. It took me 6 months to get back my custom clutch tool the last time I rented it out. The only reason I got it back was on the next repair job for that customer I charge the full replacement cost. He didn't want to pay the bill so I held his ZTR until either return the tool or paid for it.
I ended up having to have another made at the local machine shop meanwhile as I was needing it myself. At least I still had my technical drawings for the tool.
