I bought a nice 4501 on Craigslist today spent a high price of $5 on this beast, anyways I cleaned it up put new lines on it and good fuel an pulled twice and runs great. It's missing the air cleaner cover and fuel cap. Mower is in dang good shape to be around a late 70s model. Questions I have, what engine does this mower have and do the four corner wheel deck mower carry any value?

You got a great deal. It's nice to hear that somebody in the South is finding LB deals. It's been slim pickings down here in Gaw-Jaa.

The steel deck on your new mower is a minus (relative to an alloy deck), IMO.

Probably another failed attempt at the better industrial type mower, the 80's were big for trying to improve on old designs even though the older designs usually ran and performed better. Nice engine though and pretty good deal!!

I like the alloy decks , but this mower is really light guess because it has no extras on it. I used it all day cutting 3' grass and it done great little hard to start some times

If it is a bit hard to start when hot just change the two oil seals on the crankshaft.

Dead on with the bad seals, they were busted all up. So digging into it that far guess I'm going to do a rebuild. Now the puzzler when I pulled the point cover off the was just a little tab laying in one of the valleys ill attach a pic, any ideas on what it is and where it goes:confused2:

Rod p/n is 604297 and you should have a spring to hold down the governor lever but i can't find it. On a 8252 setup the spring p/n is 608993. If your engine is a single speed you might not need the spring.
