Ever since I found a super deal on this mower over a year ago, I’ve been disappointed with its performance. It seems to have two modes when mowing the thick grass in my yard: 1) clog with the bag or 2) clog without it. The chute just clogs up, whether or not the bag is in place— even with the deflector wide open. Can’t leave the door open without having all the cut grass blowing into your face. With the deflector closed, the mulched grass just builds up under the deck and overwhelms the mower.
So, I wondered if there was some kind of adapter that would make this mower into a side-discharge machine, so it could get rid of the clippings better. I found a side-discharge attachment for the HRR216 series (Honda p/n 06814-VG4-010), which I modified slightly to fit the HRX chute. Works pretty well. The chute still clogs up, but less often, since the clippings have somewhere to go.
Has anyone else taken steps to help this mower clog less in thick grass? Suggestions welcome!
