Toro Self-Propelled, key start

Have this Toro 20028, in superb condition since it has been stored for many years. Got new battery, and battery charger.
The mower roared to life first time, using key, after install battery. After that, when the key is turned, ONLY A WHINING NOISE, and doesnt start. Any suggestions on what to look for to cause this? Many thanks.

In my opinion the first thing I would look at is the bendix gear on the starter. Probably frozen or just stuck. Pull the plastic cover off and you should be able to see what I am talking about.

Rivets. you were exactly right. I pulled cover yesterday afternoon. It was stuck, and now it humms beautifully. Many thanks.
