This should be easy! Name this Part.......Picture Attached

I can't figure out what the name of this rubber part is from my Poulan Pro PD20PH48STA. Can someone out there figure it out? It is a rubber band that keeps the steering shaft connected to the ball on the axle. When the 2 are not connected the mower has no steering.

the manual obviously doesnt show the parts that your tractor actually has on it.........every company can call it a different thing......its kinda amazing thats all that holds it together....thats pretty damn cheap...........whats this all for?.....are you trying to replace the part?

There is a hole at the end of the steering shaft that fits on the ball located at the axle. (similar to a hitch on a trailer) They fit together nicely and the rubber strap keeps them connected. When I turn the steering wheel the shaft slips off the ball and I lose all steering.

a mower parts place should be able to figure this out....i run into this all the time....where the parts breakdown doesnt match whats on the tractor.....it just happened with my MTD steering

ive looking at a number of similar tractors.... and they all sell the drag link only....that may be what you have to do..its probably whats actually worn out....get new balls also if they're not included with the link..... so that everything is tight :thumbsup:

The rubber piece in the picture is a dust cover for the ball joint and has nothing to do with holding the thing together. since the ball joint is not replaceable as a single part you will need to replace the drag link. that is the entire steering rod assembly. The reason it falls apart is because the rod is badly worn. Replaced a few over the years as a current poulan dealer.

I think you are exactly right. My next question is: How do I remove the proximal end of the drag link which is still nicely connected to the ball joint? And when I get the new drag link, how will I fit it over the ball joint. I'm guessing the answer to both is hammer but I'm not the expert.

# 10 on the parts diagram [drag link] looks like it includes the ball joints....you should be able to unscrew the nut on the bottoms and remove the old balls and swap it out in one piece

reddragon has you going the right direction... the tie rod end is not removable and is an integral part of that link... The 'Ball' part will come with the new part and removes with the link... :smile:KennyV
