hello, i have a lawn boy electric start push mower model 17734.
my first question is,do these mowers have solenoids or is it just battery,key switch,fuse and starter motor in the starting system?
can you tell me how many amps the starter motor draws when cranking over the motor?

Hello..Your engine has a coil which runs on the flywheel.

ok, so if i connect a remote controlled 24 amp relay in place of the key switch, it should start the mower by remote control without burning out the relay right?
i'm only concerned with the starter system,not the spark firing part of it. thanks

I was told by a Lawn-Boy dealer, the 12v batteries used on walk behind lawnmowers for the starter were in the 3 to 5 amp range. Hope this helps. I left my Lawn-Boy repair manuel at work,,,I will check for a solenoid and reply back tomorrow.

even a 5ah battery could supply 30 amps for 10 minutes and it only takes 5 seconds or less to start,so the starter could draw a lot more amps, which would burn out the relay.
i was hoping a tech on this sight might have troubleshot the starter to check the amp draw to see if a starter was bad.
that would tell me the info i need to design this project.but thanks for the reply

I'm not sure of the model of your electric start Lawn-Boy. In the mechanics handbook, the early Lawn-Boys don't show a fuse or solenoid. The BBC (blade brake clutch) models, DO show a solenoid in the wiring diagram. Sorry, I've never measured current draw by the starter motor.

There are no solenoids or relays on any LawnBoy electric start push mowers. It is simply a battery, starter and key switch.

No, why don't you just find any electric start mower and measure the amp draw. To my knowledge every push mower uses the same basic system.

3-5 amps sounds right to me the whole starting system is kinda wimpy when it comes to power draw to start A 400 ma 12vdc charger is all it takes to charge the battery.I replaced the key on my 69 wheelhorse with just a plain dpdt toggle switch
