Had a Poulan Pro rider model PD20PH48STB year 2004 come into the shop the other day. The problem was it would start and run fine, but would die when you released the clutch pedal. Ok, now everybody is going to tell me it is a seat switch issue. Now for the interesting part, if you engaged the PTO, then released the clutch pedal it would continue to run until you shut off the PTO.

Does anybody have any ideas what was wrong with this rider, I will post the answer after people give a few suggestions.

I would say bad clutch/brake switch or operator presence relay. My best guess without checking it with a VOM would be the operator presence relay.

Rivets had the correct answer, I had a bad contact in the relay, which wasn't actually making contact, and engaging the pto bypassed the relay for the clutch.
