When in the small repair business what champion spark plugs should a shop keep on hand for repairs and over the counter sales?

What are the most common mower engines you see in your shop/area; those plugs for sure. Where will you get these plugs/ If you're buying from a jobber/supplier he may have some statistics or a recommended assortment. It's in his best interest to see you succeed.

Stens, Rbi and dixie dont have those stats. The thing I have to go by is the most popular sellers list that dixie put out awhile back.

What about any of these?

dj8y, n11yc, rcj8y, cj8, cj6y, cj7y, cj8y, rn14yc, rn11yc4, rn9yc,rn11yc, cj8, cj4, h10c, Rc12yc ,j8c ,dj6yc, J10c ,dj7yc

I know to keep the j19lm on hand.

This is where a computer inventory system comes in handy. When I was in the motorcycle biz, our system made us keep items in stock that we sold 3 of in a calendar year. To track items you didn't have, keep track of "lost sales".

Lost sales, Tell me about it. I must have lost $50 or more spark plug sales this year cause I didnt have it.

The only things I stock ahead in my shop is 1/4 in fuel line and fuel filters and a small supply of hardware. Every thing else I buy it as I need it.

Not sure how you would do it with mowers, but when I had my bike shop I made a list of all the major bike models going back 10 years and had them all in stock. There are many that use the same so it wasn't a huge amount plus they are small and cheap so a few hundred in inventory just about covers all your needs. As much as I tried there was occassionally that odd ball that came in and I had to either lose the sale or order it. I would deeply discount those who wanted to order and usually I could have them the next day. I am not sure how stores like Lowes do it, but maybe you could stop by and write down all the plugs they stock. I know they always have my RC12YC's.

I adjusted your list for the most common plugs for small engines. Maybe a couple cj14, h10c, qc12yc. If I remember correctly the Tecumseh ohv engines take a rn4yc4 or something like that.

I changed over to NGK a few years back after having a bad case of j19lm's. Would put in a new one and run it for ten minutes and it would quit and then would have to replace it. Sometimes would go though 3-4 plugs before one would run for more than ten minutes.

I had trouble with champion on that same issue you did but in 5hp briggs horz. shaft engine that was on a go cart. Did you ever have any problems with NGK. Most those of I get from torch but few only get from champion like the h10c.
