Hi, I recently had a Snapper handed down to me. Engine runs great, blade engages. When I go to put it in any gear nothing happens. I managed to look under the mower while it was in gear to see if all the parts are working and what isn't. The drive disk, friction disk, and axle all appear to be spinning like they should. I thought there may be something wrong in the differential. After a novice inspection no gears/chains appear worn/damaged. Any advice would be helpful.

I would remove both rear wheels and check for a broken bolt, attatching the hub to the axle. This is not uncommon at all. Check the left one first, it is more likely to break than the right.

bolts are good. i have a feeling that its the sprocket in the differential inside teeth being worn down . im having trouble finding a parts store that wont take 3 weeks to order the part.

Most of the differential problems are stripped axle gears. Usually, a dead giveaway would be that it would snatch and jerk when turning. I guess if it was run that way long enough it would eventually round off all the teeth and stop pulling altogether. It could be the sprocket and/or chain, but in my experience 90% of the time it is axle gears. Either way, the differential would have to come apart.

Shut the tank vent off, then sit the mower upright on it's stand, put it in neutral, the spin one wheel one direction, and see what
the other wheel does. Then spin both wheels in the same direction and look/listen at the friction disc area.

spun 1, and the other went in opposite direction. spun both in same direction I heard grinding in the "diff"( friction disk did not turn). Opened up the "diff" and let the sprocket and 11 toothed pin get on an angle to where they would lock together; spun both in same direction axle, friction disk, and drive disk all started spinning.
