I split the hub of mine with a saws all, drove a wedge in the kerf and took it off. Any outward force much heavier than a feather will screw up the internals on most.

What I have done is remove the transaxle from the mower. Hang it with a rope around the wheel. So the wheel is supporting all the weight. Hit the axle in the center of the wheel and the transaxle will fall. So don't hang it to high.

Don't try and hit the wheel off of the axle.
