Recoil spring roller upper in seconds

Roller upper? LMAO..

Some of you may have seen this already.
I just took a 1/4 allen bit, cut a small grove through the center of it, about 1/4" deep. Then cleaned off the burs with a wire wheel. Then attached it to my 1/4 impact.
Screwed a screw into a flat wood surface, to hook the outside end into.
You gotta hand roll it up enough to get your hand over the spring. Then put the bit into the other end and pull the trigger pretty slowly.

Darn thing rolls up in just seconds.

You really need to get some better tools
There is a nice little kit of recoil starter spring winders that if you want to keep your fingers attached to your hands is a must have in the tool kit.
Funny, I used it yesterday to refit a spring into the pull stat of a B &S hanging off a tiller.
The customer had been batteling with it all Saturday before he finally brought it in.
Eyes popped out of his head when he saw how easy it is with the tool

Some years ago I threw away a Craftsman Bushwhacker because of this. Replacing the rope and the spring came after me. Spent a day trying to get that thing back in, gave up. Good machine too. Wish I knew then......

Another one of those special tools that you think you don't need till you do then you wonder how you got by without one

BTW, you're right. I do need better tools. Trying to stock up an d buy tools takes baby steps. But I'm steppin'.

Looks like I have the plastic knock off one.
Just makes spring replacement sooo easy and fast.
OK not needed for a mower but those PIA chain saw springs hidden 10' deep inside a cover, bliss .
No cur fingers, no spring smacking you in the face and clean .

I can't find a metal one. The plastic one I found, is like $50. Worth it if it's not cheap plastic. Plastic tools that deal with metal objects just doesn't sound good.

Probably done about 200 or more with mine.
The trick is as shown in the video to do it on a flat surface then back the winder off slowly
I am sure you could break it if you tried hard enough .
Think about it 3/4 of the spring housings are plastic themselves .
