does it stop like you turned the key off, or does it bog down and die?

It will most likely be the seat or reverse switch
If you mower shuts down if you mow in reverse then turning the PTO on when the switch is reading reverse will shut down the engine.
Every one goes ballistic with seat switch removal but usually overlooks the reverse switch .

Never a good idea to piggy back on another persons thread Jim.
Boggs down & dies will be an engine &/or deck problem .
If it bog down when you engage the blades standing still, usually it will be caused by a deck problem like a bad bearing in the blade spindles , debris wrapped around a blade , frozen idler pulley or the like .

Otherwise it is an engine problem and is generally a bad governor or dirty carburettor .
The biggest load on the engine is running the blades .
Sit some one in the seat, engage the blades then manually move the governor arm to make the engine increase speed .
Do the same without the blade running.
Let us know what happens.
