Platinum Intek 440000 series

Hi all,

I have a riding mower Yt 4500(Engine 445877-1565-G5) that is surging when running, dies shortly after warming up. Fuel filter changed, new air filter, spark plugs, new fuel pump. Oil was very clean but low, no visible leaks, perhaps blowing by? Anyways, I suspected the carburetor, took it off and apart to clean, and I see the intake manifold flange is warped (plastic i/m). The o rings on the runners are somewhat distorted also. I work on cars usually, and so I'm wasn't surprised to see the plastic intake manifold was warped, since car manufacturer's have mostly switched to plastic, and they have warping issues also. Anyways, I searched google for warped briggs intake, and see there are some series engines that had cast aluminum manifolds, but I need either a part number or engine model code to search through a parts list. Can anyone help me out?

First we are going to need the model, type, and code of your engine, which should be stamped into the valve cover. Then we can loose for similar engines and see if they used aluminum on any of them.

It looks like all the 440000 engines use the plastic intake.

40---- series V twins will fit if any of them used cast aluminum also, you can flatten the wrapped plastic by using 400 grit wet/dry paper on plate glass. Warping of plastic manifold is usually caused by over tightening. Make sure gas cap vent is open.

I would imagine that as long as the donor engine has the same bank angle (which I am sure they do, looks like 90*), the deck height is the same, the head height is the same, the manifold will fit. The owner's manual categorizes the 400000, 440000, and 490000 intek engines together, so I'm sure they use the same basic block and heads, just with different bore sizes to increase displacement. The 49m900 series uses an aluminum manifold, I just don't know if 797503 manifold and 695241 from my engine are similar enough to work. I guess it would take a briggs dealer with both in stock to really know.

Tinkerer, if you're sure they all interchange, do you know about some engines having a spacer between the carb and intake? I've heard of them being on some models, but I'm unsure at this time if I'd need one, or where to even get one if I did..

Second to Tinkerer on the over torque. Plastic is prone to "flow." I would observe the factory setting and make sure flat washers are in place. I guess the purpose of spacers is to reduce heat flow?
