Odd behavior

I was gifted a Murray 42” 15.5 HP mower because it “wouldn’t start”. Tinkered with it this morning and found some issues, but those are easy. The weird behavior the mower has is that when I’m cranking it, it starts right up. It stays running as long as I’m actively engaging the starter. As soon as I let off the starter, it dies.

if someone can point me in the right direction to troubleshoot this, I would appreciate it.

We'll need the model and type of the engine, as well as the mower model number, sounds like there may be some funky wiring

Possibly a bad key switch. If possible remove the wire on the switch marked M and try again. If the engine stays running you’ve probably found your problem, unless the kill wire has a short.
