I have a 21hp briggs, model #407777-0167-E1. There's only a cap where the oil filter should be. Since I have so much to mow (probably 8+ acres) seems a little extra protection (installing an oil filter) would be necessary. I run Mobil 1 synthetic in it. But would like to adapt an oil filter to it...

Question: Is there an internal oil pump in models that already have oil filters? Or do they all come with an oil pump, and so just adding the necessary threaded extension to install an oil filter be OK? If it doesn't have an oil pump, would I need to take the engine apart to install one?

Or is this just a waste of time. I understand that oil filters only job is to clean the oil. And so, changing the oil more frequently is OK. But, the synthetic oil is so expensive. I was hoping that I could not only save time and money on oil changes. But also keep the oil cleaner..

Any suggestions?

If you have the spot for the oil filter, covered with a cap. You can remove the cap, install the oil filter threaded nimple, and then install the oil filter. Unless it is a full pressure lube engine, the oil pump oil from the sump, through the filter, and back into the sump. some oil the lower crankshaft bearings

How can I find out if it's a "full pressure lube" engine?

You need these 2 parts. That enginge comes with a plate or a filter. Im assuming they opted for the cheeper route.

Since it only came with the plate, is there any chance that they didn't need an actual oil pump? Instead used some sort of slinger? I see the pump listed. But wasn't sure if every model was exactly as pictured...

No in the parts diagram the main engine has oil pump. The plate just returns the oil just as if an oil filter was in place. The plug should not be call a plug but an oil filter bypass.
