Tractor is a 1997 Simplicity Regent 14 HP. Hydro. Motor is vangard Model 28P777 Type 8641-A1. Code 970507Z0.
My son shut down the tractor and when he went to restart it Nothing. I Tried and have only a faint click on front of motor when the key is turned. I jumped the starter solenoid under the seat and it started. Figuring a bad solenoid I replaced it and still same click and no Start. Battery is new, Solenoid is new. What next? There is a small silver box on the starter with 2 wires to it, What is that and can it be the problem. Starter maybe? New solenoid no good ? Also where is the clicking coming from? can't see anything showing on the moter front that would click.
Any thoughts much appreciated. I can do some of the work myself but am no mechanic.
Thanks,
CG.

The first thing I would do is remove ALL battery cables and clean them, both ends.

Thanks for the reply, I have taken each cable off the battery and the solanoid with no luck.
Any more ideas?

Hi there,
your electrical fault is probably a lockout relay, used to
disconnect the start circuit when the pto is on, and on
some models it's incorporated with the brake switch and even
a seat switch. It's generally located behind the dash panel
but look at the other switches too as any one may be the
culprit.

Thanks all for the replies. My son crawled under the tractor and found a wire connector off. We replaced that and now have a new problem, I have power but when i turn the key there is a grinding sound. Almost as if the starter is grinding. Funny that it had no problem starting before i replaced the solenoid and jumped the solenoid I thought was bad. So now what, Low battery? although I put a charger on it and it seems to have a good charge.
Maybe I have a wire on the solenoid wrong? Thats all I can think of as thats all that changed after this started.
I also looked and cannot find a model number or serial number for the tractor. Only now it is a 97 regent.
Thanks all for the help.
CG.

sounds like a bad starter cable connection or low battery...remember... sometimes you have to charge the battery for 24 hours:smile:

Thanks again all, Found it. Seems I had a small ground wire hooked to the solanoid instead of the battery.
